Computer Science: To analyze or separate (input, for example) into more easily
processed components.

Root: from Latin porti, a part, according to each part,

It means to cut into pieces. To convert one format into another, you must first cut
the input message (source format) into its individual fields and then put them each
into their proper places in the target format. Thus "parsing" is really the first
stage of mapping/translating to another format.
