Actually, yes! It is possible. I have implemented EDI that takes the raw
data, feeds it into a tracking system automatically. The tracking system
feeds into the billing database, automatically. The billing system creates
invoices and credits, automatically, then updates the Accounts Payable
system. All automatically. But, as I stated before, the initial EDI is
flawed, so any obviously bad data is extracted (automatically btw) and
stored in an error database for review and fixing by a person, manually
(with automation, since no one has direct access into the database - well
almost no one). Of course all of this runs on an ancient technology
(mainframe) using obsolete languages like COBOL for some of the processing.
Don't get me wrong here, I hate working in COBOL, but it is not going away
anytime soon.
PS. Any business not doing EDI, will not last long in business these days.
We all do EDI of some kind, whether it is sharing Excel spreadsheets, plain
text in e-mails or FTP's, X12, or XML. It is all EDI, and it can all be
automated. I know, I have done it. From DOS batch files, to Pro Comm
scripts, to using VAN's, to direct connects. Maybe next month I will even be
able to push out an XML solution.

Every system needed... really? So if I'm a customer and I don't use EDI,
your telling me that it still works automatically? Don't think so!

There is no retyping on any systems I have worked on for 15 years, EDI posts
directly to every system needed and the process is automatic.
