Hi all.

As a part of my introduction, I am managing EDI at a
manufacturing company that deals with the sporting
goods and uses EDI to trade with wholesalers like
Walmart, Kmart, SEARS and so on.

After hearing so much of XML/EDI as "future" step
towards EDI, we are planning to think seriously into
it. We are planning to either looking at some project
that has been developed to replace the existing EDI or
devolping a prototype to do so. As a new member of
this group I have received some useful information
which has raised some concerns for me. I am presenting
those formats as follows.

1. Format of data: As I understand, the XML will cause
the change of the format of data. This effort will
require a redoing of most of our mappings. What will
be the returns on those efforts apart from the more
readable format of data? Is the XML format going to be
"more" standardised in industry. Say if with X12 100
trading partners use 50 different formats, then with
XML, are we going to have say 25-30 different formats.
As I take it from the previous discussions, it is not
fair to quote a figure less than this. Apart from
this, I dont see any reason why other problems of
conventional EDI be absent in XML.

2. Communication: With XML, are we still looking
towards the VAN to move our data? If not, is data
movement over the internet not going to cause a major
security and administrative problem?

If these concerns appear to basics and have been
discussed already, please pass me on the threads and
I'll do the necessary.

Thanks,
Ashu Garg
EDI Manager, Bell Sports Inc.

PS: Can anybody suggest some good reference for the
technical part of XML?
