David RR Webber has to smile at all this talk over the word "deprecate":
"My father is of course the quitessential Englishman - and has long (40+
years!) demoaned the Americans ability to invent words that don't exist,
or use phrases or terms incorrectly, not to mention hideous euphormisms:
example: 'Friendly fire'."
Dear David:
I notice you people invent new words, too. The rubes in Central Ohio
would say "quintessential" instead of "quitessential." But we do bemoan
the English tendency to "demoan." By the way, is a "euphormism" a
British euphemism?
Good English is not typically heard here deep in the American interior
on the edge of the wilderness. Our insecurity drives us to use
dictionaries when corresponding with our betters.
