The dot com world has been gutted. Dot coms are dying left and right. Much
of the investment money driving XML initiatives was living on the B2B hype
which was younger brother to the B2C. Now B2C is dying and it would seem
that B2B is going along with it.

>>> Enter George W Bush, stage left, riding white pony and throwing bags of
        tax refunds.

You also see XML initiatives failing, like that Dell hub that shut down the
other day.

>>> A lousy business model cannot be propped up by technology.
Everyone can invent their own Edsel. Remember Microsoft Bob?

None of our trading partners are interested in touching XML for another 2
to
3 years until the standards settle. Noone wants to invest in an XML
product, because it may be useless next year.

>>> This is why ebXML is so important - to set the foundation.
There is NO automatic ROI simply from using XML!!! Therefore
smart people will continue to find good uses. Everyone else is
waiting until everyone else 'owns a FAX machine'.

Is the truth finally being shaken out - That XML is not a "Magic Problem
Solver" and that the real issue is and always was the differing
capabilities
of different backend systems?
<
>>> There is a lot of responsibility on application vendors to make
XML work. Some are digging in hoping they can retain their
market share by not doing XML. The paradigm shift is the
internet,
XML is an enabler and a force multipier.

Further thought - the Gartner camel curve of technology adoption -
XML is now entering the 'broad adoption' phase. There are still many
operational issues to resolve before it truely crosses that bridge.
At least its getting less sexy - that means the broad assimulation is
happening!
