At what point does a small question become a large question? This has been
real educational and I have appreciated reading all of the comments.
At Peabody Coal we are using EDI transactions 404 (shipment manifest) and
863 (coal quality). The EDI transactions are loaded with required minutia
meaningful to the railroads no doubt, but beyond the scope of most users.
I would like to see a kinder and gentler (read this as relevant) set of
standards tailored to specific industries. Are there any coal shippers or
receivers out there?

The most prominent is RosettaNet in the electronics industry. The others
are
still coming in as some are adopting Biztalk and some ebXML. Many are
taking
their current ANSI ASCX12 standard documents and rolling their own just as
they did in EDI.
