There are several methods that are considered to be safe & secure.
The one that stands out is ebXML Messaging Services, as it is not industry, regional or company specific.
ebXML Messaging Services provides security through the use of XML Digital Signatures. ebXML MS allows you to sent various transactions in the Payload. The type of transaction can be XML, EDI or any other payload.
There is a great deal of information available on the use of ebXML Messaging Services, plus there are ebXML interoperability tests that have been conducted, and continue to be conducted, to help assure users of its practical use.
