IMHO removing this feature is even more counter-intuitive. Moreover it
would prevent ``synchronizing'' the scrolling of several views of the
same document.

No.

Explicitly select a node before scrolling. The caret is moved only when
there is no explicit selection at all.

Select the start of the text (e.g. a few characters) before scrolling to
the end of the desired selection and, after that, extending the text
selection to this point using Shift-Click. Once again, the caret is
moved only when there is no explicit selection at all.
