Dear XMLmind,

I wonder if you can tell me if I have correctly installed XMLmind XMLeditor.
Please bear with me as I explain what I have done.:

I downloaded <http://www.xmlmind.net/xmleditor/_download/xxe-std-3_1_0.zip>
xxe-std-3_1_0.zip from http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/download.shtml and
unzipped it into a temporary directory but I couldn't find any instructions
for installing it. According to
http://www.happy-monkey.net/docbook/gui-editor.html, there is a Windows
setup binary which makes installation very easy, but I couldn't find one.

I found the userguide.pdf (and also an html copy on the website) but that
only gave me manual instructions for installing the product (section 1.3).
So I followed those.

The instructions say to "Make sure that the Java[tm]bin/ directory is
referenced in the $PATH and, at the same time, check that the Java[tm]
runtime in the $PATH has the right version:" So I Google searched $PATH to
find out what that meant. It's an environment variable that you access from
the Control Panel > System > Advanced. I had already installed DITA from
sourceforge but had forgotten how $PATH was accessed. Anyway, $PATH refers
to JAVA_HOME and JAVA_HOME is set to C:\DITA_toolkit\J2SDK rather than
C:\DITA_toolkit\J2SDK\bin. Is that sufficient?

The next task was to understand what was meant by "$ java -version" in
section 1.2. I presume this is a UNIX instruction. I attended a half day
UNIX course in 1975 and haven't done much UNIX since then. So I opened a
command window with Start > Run... but it didn't work. It didn't recognise
the dollar. Then, glancing at the $ cd line in point 2, I wondered if $ was
a UNIX prompt. So I opened a command window again and tried "java -version"
without the dollar. That worked! The version was slightly different but I
didn't know what to do about that.

The next task was to interpret the instructions in point 2. I decided to
open a command window again.

cd didn't do anything
tar zxvf xxe-std-3_1_0.tar.gz wasn't recognized
tar xxe-std-3_1_0.zip wasn't recognized
Eventually I decided that tar must be a UNIX equivalent to Winzip so I
unzipped it with Windows. Was that correct?
I remember that ls is a UNIX list command so I ignored it.

Point 3 recommended adding xxe to the path, which by now I think I
understand.What happens if I don't.

Reading section 1.3 gave me the idea of adding a shortcut to xxe.bat on the
desktop. Finally, double-clicking the shortcut opened XMLmind XMLeditor
giving me a blank XMLeditor screen.

My questions are... is there an easier way to install the editor, and have I
missed anything vital?

Thanks,
Stephen Ogley
