Because we consider the macro facilities found in DTDs as a legacy from
SGML which should have never been added to XML.

We 100% agree with you.

For now, the best we can do, which is elegant, maintenable, easy to use
and separates content from style, is described here:

(But may be in your case, this is not relevant.)

PS: The integrated spreadsheet engine (not limited to tables: the
document *is* the spreadsheet) can do wonders, but unlike the above
solution, it is not available in free Standard Edition.
