Thanks for the clarification.   Schema refs are confusing.

When I create a Docbook 4 document, the Docbook menu offers
several options to generate HTML or PDF.  The only option with
a Docbook 5 document is "Convert to Docbook5 then Open ...".
Is there support for generating output from Docbook 5 docs?
