My answer to your first email was incorrect.

Inserting a footnote inside an emphasis *seems* to look good (except
that the footnote is displayed using an italic font).

In fact, this does not work at all: if I save the document and reload
it, I can reproduce what is displayed in the screenshot you sent me in
your second email.

XXE limitation: there is *no way* to insert elements having
display:block inside elements having display:inline and get
something that looks good.
