Thank you! After about another hour of trial and error, I discovered how to make the Reference work by doing exactly what you suggested - building a series external documents that are referenced by a Master Document.
Thank you for your quick response. For those who care, here are my "Notes for Dummies" << Reference Documentation >> Setup - We suggest building a folder for your Master Document and then building one or more Reference Folders underneath that folder for organization of the referenced docs. 1) Build your reference information in a stand alone XML Mind document. 2) Open the Master Document in XML Mind 3) Open the Reference Document in the same copy of XML Mind 4) In the left pane/tree view of the Reference Document, highlight the parent/encompassing section of information to be referenced 5) <Ctrl><Shift>-C 6) In the left pane/tree view of the Master Document, highlight the parent section of information which the Reference information should come AFTER. 7) Select Edit -> Paste After 8) A Confirmation Box will appear asking to use an Absolute or Relative path. Select RELATIVE (which will allow the movement of the entire folder structure to another location/server without breakage. 9) When you get the warning on the Reference, hit "Yes". Creating modular documents is fully supported by Standard Edition. There are no restriction at all compared to Professional Edition. "Referencing another part of this document is not supported." means that you cannot reference an element of the document you are currently editing. Example: you author an imaginary "<important>Inportant: backup your files!</important>" element in document "userguide.xml" and try to reference this <important> element in several different places in "userguide.xml". You need to create the <important> element in another document, let's call it "snippets.xml" and from there, paste a reference to it in "userguide.xml". And, if even this does not work, it is almost certainly because you are attempting to paste the reference to the <important> element at the wrong place. For example, you use command "Paste" instead of using command "Paste After". > The help doc doesn't see to be explicit enough for me to figure out how/if a > reference can occur from another document where I could place shared information. Please, take the time to read http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/docs/user/userguide3.html#id.s3. (The online help is absolutely not a replacement for this tutorial.)
