I had this idea too but it requires a very fast machine to be usable
with a large DTD or with a mid-size XML Schema. May be it should be an
option?

The text field already supports auto-completion. Type the first letters
of the element name than press SPACE.

Keyboard die-hards should not use the Edit tab which has been designed
specifically for mouse-oriented users.
