I don't know about APT, but from the AFT docs I can see that it is around from
June '99.

It looks they're very similar, so choice is more based on the quality of 
conversion, since XML -> PDF -> XHTML -> LaTeX (LyX) are the real targets.

However, apt can be handy in the process of moving to "real" XML editor like
XXE.

I'm interested whether your Pro version of XXE will have some license for 
educational purposes?

Free version is probably sufficent for DocBook writing, but probably there
will be need for using some other DTD for creating course material as well as
for student's projects, assignments etc., and therefore we will need to edit
documents with some other Schema and/or DTD.
