I just changed line #108 of $XFC_HOME/xsl/docbook/fo/block.xsl into <fo:block background-color="#d3d3d3"> and it works fine for PDF output. It doesn't work for RTF output though, because it turns out that XFC doesn't handle the 'background-color' property correctly in the case of nested blocks. This will be fixed in the next release.
