Hi Conrefs normally display transcluded text, i.e, the text they are linked to, rather than the conref itself. Conrefs can also be toggled to show the conref itself. (F2z) . It used to be that transcluded text appeared with a shaded background, because it was read-only. This was useful, because you could clearly see what text in the document was conref'd.
