Well.. The standard location for this sort of thing is the one I suggested:
~/Library/Application Support/addon/

Hmm.. The page I linked suggests otherwise -- says to open package and unzip
there.

Which wouldn't be possible if you don't archive the original addon .zip
files and you copy a new version and replace old.
