At least I'm one of the people who reported this inconvenience several 
years ago.

Wouldn't it be easier to preserve *all* the space (not just for 
xml:space="preserve") while in the lenient mode for invalid documents? 
This alone would be a dramatic improvement for using XEE to fix invalid 
documents.
