Aside from automatically setting the proper filename filter in some
cases (e.g. "*.dita" filename filter in the above case), do you think
that using the *native* file chooser of the platform (at least on
Windows and on the Mac) rather than Java's emulation would solve some of
the other problems (e.g. autocompletion of filenames)?

I think that would solve it neatly. Specifically, this autocomplete issue would 
be most useful when I am selecting files to create paths for href attributes, 
whether for the ditamap topicref elements or dita xref elements (or others).
