Yes, I get the exact same behavior in my default version of Docbook5: I remove the "whitespace: pre" and it acts exactly like the problem I'm having in my custom config, and yet...
When I swap out my custom CSS for the default docbook5 CSS, the problem lives on. When I remove my custom .xxe file and just import the docbook5.xxe instead, the problem is fixed. (Yes, I have the recommended fix in my custom .xxe as well). It seems clear that something in my custom xxe is blocking this. Don't bother wasting cycles on this. If you have any thoughts, they are welcome, but my custom .xxe file needed to be cleaned up anyway, so I'm using this as an opportunity to do so.
