Another detailled example.

The following works:
I create a new DITA task using "File|New" and then save it to disk using
"File|Save As".
I change the default file name to "test" and the file type "DITA Files" is set.
When I hit "Save" I get - like I expected - the file test.dita.

The following doesn't work:
I create a new DITA task using "File|New" and then save it to disk using
"File|Save As".
I change the default file name to "subject.test" and the file type "DITA Files"
is set.
When I hit "Save" I get the file subject.test and not - what I suspected -
subject.test.dita.

Other programs like Microsoft Office always add the extension that matches the
file type, even if the file name contains dots. That is what our users expect.

I'm sorry but I lack some context in order to understand where is the
problem.

I mean, if I create a new DITA task using "File|New" and then save it to
disk using "File|Save As", I have *no* *problem* specifying a filename
such as "foo.bar.task" for the save file.

Are you talking about the file extension automatically added when the
user does not specify one by hand? That is, option "Ensure that a save
filename has an extension". See
