No, you missed nothing at all.

We do not plan to transclude the content of a DITA map. In our opinion
this does not make sense because a DITA map is not just a master
document comprising several modules. It's the specification of one or
more deliverables, containing much more than references to topics.

You seem to miss the multi-file search/replace facility, typically
operating on all the files found in a given directory matching a given
wildcard (e.g. *.dita), found in many advanced text and XML editors. We
plan to implement such facility in XXE v5 (expected at the end of this
year).

FYI, we plan to release XXE v4.8 next week which will support authoring
and processing DITA 1.2 documents. However this version will not contain
high-level authoring tools allowing to cope with keys (i.e. easily
create @keyref, @conkeyref). Such high-level authoring tools are not
expected before version 4.9.
