I don't know if it's a good idea to completely give up the community branch but I can understand the decision. I maintain an open source project myself and know very well how difficult it can be to make a living from services round the project without a decent base of users being willing to pay for a license, Don't forget, XXE is not OpenSource and for a specialised commercial product of this quality licence pricing is moderate. After having looked at a couple of other products and working with the XXE evaluation copy for a while I've decided that it's worth the money, fullstop.
