Hardware basically doesn't support it, clients often handle it incorrectly, and its mere existence adds overhead to the 32bpp path. If you really are forced to use a 24bpp framebuffer you are almost certainly better off with modesetting's strategy, which is to downconvert in the shadow upload hook.
First two remove the support code from xfree86 and fb. Second two clean up some dead code from the acceleration layers.
