Even if there is no page-flipping, why does blitting the back buffer to the screen take so long (It didn't in the old days when I used rep movsd, but that was 320x200x8)? Or are all apps drawing directly to the visible screen surface, rather than to a single back buffer in memory? Could composition help here? Could compiz do the entire rotation magic in software? Given that I can get 3D acceleration?
