Running that command once I'm logged into gnome restored the functionality!

$ setxkbmap -option terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp

I added it to my ~/.xinitrc under my exec gnome-session line but it didn't take 
effect.  Can you recommend an easy method to have this auto-run when gdm starts?
