You would be able to set a PDF page as PNG Background which is attached to the Xournal. Xournal++ is new written from scratch (except stroke recognizer, input handling and all other code which I didn't mention now). Because I have exactly the same format I could compare it with Xournal with the Image patch (I also did this: Use compiz, set transparency and move the Xournal++ window over the Xournal window to see the differences.) You don't have to discuss about the format we have now, this format is defined, and will not be change any more. The features Xournal++ will have for the first release is defined now, the current version in the SVN trunk is nearly finished for the first release (alpha...), toolbar editing has to be implemented, and a lot of bugfixes, but I don't add something new. (Ok, I can implement attach a PDF page as PNG if you really need them, this is not a big change) BUT After we have a working Version (hopefully in a few moths or earlier;-)), where all features are working etc. I can start on new features for Xournal++. Because I would do things which are anyway not compatible with the old version I'll create a new file format, the old format will only be supported for reading (for ever;-)) but writing won't be supported any more. (Usually a user will not recognize this, as long as the user don't try to open the file with an older version...) If the time comes we can discuss about this new format and about new features for Xournal++ (for me important: Multiple PDF annotating) but not now.
