OK -- now I get an error because zlib is missing:

/usr/bin/ld: xournalpp-LoadHandler.o: undefined reference to symbol
'gzclose'
/usr/bin/ld: note: 'gzclose' is defined in DSO //usr/lib64/libz.so.1 so try
adding it to the linker command line
//usr/lib64/libz.so.1: could not read symbols: Invalid operation
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
    make[3]: *** [xournalpp] Error 1

I added "zlib" to pkg_modules in configure.ac, and regenerated the
config files.

I recompiled with input debugging enabled. I saved the file and attach
it. I also attach the debug output. I drew one line with the left
button, and one with the middle button. Only the one with the middle
button shows up. (As you point out, there is a zero length line in the
place I started the line with the left mouse button.)

Thanks,

GI
