Sorry Torsten I haven't replied to you. The last two weeks have been crazy.
 >> Vivotab note 8

Torsten> This is an interesting device! I was thinking to get an Microsoft
Torsten> Surface Pro3 or this large 13.1" Sony ebook reader.
Torsten> But both are much more expensive devices.
Torsten> Do you plan to operate it under linux? If so, are you aware of a touch

I don't think it is possible to install Linux on it. I plan to use it
primarily as a xournal device.

 Torsten> / touch-pen friendly window manager.

Torsten> To be honest, I saw Windows 8 on the surface pro2 and from the few
Torsten> minutes I spend with it, I had the impression that it was very well
Torsten> designed for tablet usage. Nice softkeyboard, wide buttons for big
Torsten> fingers and a lot of little tools which make use of the digitizer and
 Torsten> touch-based interaction.

yes and no. It is not a very usable device because the applications are
just not there. I only use music, xournal, emacs and sometimes chrome for
mail. I don't find the rest of the applications very useful.

Torsten> The other question I have, is the screen size right? To correct a A4
Torsten> based paper I would looking for a bigger screen. Basically, my
Torsten> annotations should have a similar size compared to the written text.

I annotate 1/2 a page at a time in landscape mode, or one column in
portrait mode.

Torsten> Is this possible on a 8 inch screen without loosing track of the
Torsten> entire page layout due to constantly zooming in and out or panning
 Torsten> around like crazy?

It depends on what you are annotating. For me the convenience is
portability.

Torsten> I would think this device is a nice compromise between price and
Torsten> mobility on one side and usage as a lecturer tool on the other side.
Torsten> Just would like to now if it still can be used as a lecturer tool.

I don't think you can connect a display to it (directly) but I might
test it with vnc and see if I can do the annotations in one device and
project from another.

The Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2 is a better device for annotation (in
general), but it is larger and slower, but it works very
well for xournal and at 10" it is more convenient for annotation, but
less portable than the 8. if you can find a cheap TP2, I strongly
recommend it (as long as you are willing to live with its speed in
non-xournal apps).

Torsten> Would be glad if you could share you experience with the device.

So far so good. I have been able to annotate some papers with it and use
it to read some PDFs.

+ good battery life
+ decent screen, but typefaces are smallish.
+ wacom digitizer
+ full dropbox synchronization to get files in and out
+ decent charging speed
+ cheap! (I paid C$280 + tax)
+ windows 8
+ microsd card

- windows 8
- it does not fit in my pocket
- only micro usb (requires OTG cable for connecting external devices,
but it is possible to connect a USB hub.. from there the
   possibilities are endless
- no video out

 Torsten> Thanks for posting this.

 Torsten> Torsten

Torsten> CC. The device is about 311 Euro in Germany... I will never understand
Torsten> this price difference between Europe and US prices.
