Ah, that dealt with it (actually, i modified a line in linux.cf 
rather than figure out the syntax for appending stuff to a variable). 
Went back to direct-drive (without FBDev) and 16-bit, and DRI works 
perfectly.  Performance appears to be in line with expectations, 
given that I'm moving from a Radeon-equipped desktop PC.

*briefly wonders why ATI drivers aren't built on PPC, since the vast 
majority of recent Mac models use ATI cards - apart from the latest 
set of G4's...*
