I believe this is called xdm :) We have two users, "24bit" and "8bit",
with no passwords set, and login shells which will change the
configuration between TrueColor and PseudoColor.  Users with specific
needs will first log on as one of these pseudousers, X will terminate,
xdm will start a new X server, they log on as themselves.  It's not
very elegant, but it works fine.
