sorry, not quite an answer for your question, but:
in my opinion the siliconmotion driver is very poorly maintained (if anyone 
does it at all). i have written to siliconmotion as well as to this list 
several times with extensive bug reports (i have the smi lynx3dm sm720) - 
including logs as well as debug info - but i only received a response from 
others having the same problem

now, could you tell me what kind of siliconmotion card you have? for me, at 
the moment X always crashes on virtual terminal text->X switch if the screen 
content changed while in textmode. sometimes the system even freezes 
completely!
do you know anything about this problem?
i have heard from at least two other users having the same crashes and they 
both did not find anything ...

if anyone with knowledge about the siliconmotion driver internals reads this, 
please ask me for some logs, i would be very happy if this bug is fixed in 
the next time.
