I tested latest redhat kernel (2.4.7-enterprise-2.19 on
people.redhat.com/arjanv) Friday, and the X server is stable since.
Not a single crash during the whole week-end (over 800min user time
for now). So I assume the problem was a kernel pb, and has been
solved in this new version.
When having a look at the changelog, this new version seems to
integrate some stuff from 2.4.9-ac4 which probably is responsible
for this stability improvement :
