XFree86-4.0.99 and XFree86-4.1.0
ATI Mobile Rage 128 with 8MB
linux 2.4.10 with DRI enabled

I just moved my system from a laptop with a celeron700 to a laptop
with a PentiumIII 800. All other components are identically ((they
even report the same device-version) Nevertheless X behaves very
different. Fonts-Antialiasing suddenly works and X crashed frequently
on suspend and shutdown.

To make sure I didnt change any config by accident I just removed the
harddisk and put it back in the old machine and booted and I had no
font antialiasing again and no crashes.

What code is in X-4.1.0 that relies so heavily on PIII-SSE (?)
-Features that it cant do fontantialiasing without it. On the other
hand it seems that parts of this code are still buggy.
(How) can I disable this PIII-features ? I dont need this
antialiasing anyway. (But I need DRI)

After I upgraded from my home-brew 4.0.99 to 4.1.0 X is running
slightly more stable now, but still crashed frequently.

Can there be a problem, that the kernel and the r128-module was
compiled on a celeron, while now all is running on the PIII ? I didnt
compile the X on my own, but used the glibc22-binaries.

thnx,
peter

ps: there is a second funny thing with my new laptop : the lcd-screen
or the vga-card makes very funny noises (like high-pitched
radio-signals) under certain circumstances. It doesnt occure on boot,
but a bit later, when linux starting to initialize the higher levels.
There is no such noise when I run windows on it and the noise
disappears after the first suspend. Its definitely not the sound and
not the harddisk and it vanished immediately if I suspend the screen,
so I'm, quite sure its screen or vga-card. Any ideas about this ?
