I've followed your sugestion and took the Modelines reported in
/var/log/XFree86.0.log and added two new modes with half the timings:

(**) ATI(0): Default mode "1024x768": 65.1 MHz, 48.5 kHz, 60.8 Hz
(II) ATI(0): Modeline "1024x768" 65.15 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 770 775
797 -hsync -vsync
(**) ATI(0): Default mode "640x480": 65.1 MHz, 48.5 kHz, 61.9 Hz
(II) ATI(0): Modeline "640x480" 65.15 640 664 768 960 480 480 483 495
-hsync -vsync
(**) ATI(0): Mode "512x384": 65.1 MHz, 48.5 kHz, 62.1 Hz
(II) ATI(0): Modeline "512x384" 65.15 512 512 672 832 384 384 387 396
-hsync -vsync
(**) ATI(0): Mode "320x240": 65.1 MHz, 42.4 kHz, 54.8 Hz
(II) ATI(0): Modeline "320x240" 65.15 320 352 528 832 240 240 242 246
-hsync -vsync

And these are the results (I don't know if is of any help but I've tried
to be a little more specific):

1024x768:
        -perfect

640x480:
-dashed flashing white vertical line at 1/5 of the screen
-subtractive yellow vertical line at 2/3 of the screen (i.e, white
turns yellow, blue turns green, etc...)

512x384:
-subtractive yellow vertical line at 7/8 of the screen

320x240:
-dashed flashing white vertical line at 2/5 of the screen
-the last vertical stripe of the screen mirror the contents of the
middle of the screen (perhaps this is caused by invalid / bad rounded
timings in this mode)

These vertical lines are wider than one physical pixel of the LCD.
