Greetings,

I've searched around for answers and have tried a number of things to
get this to work, but so far all has been in vain. So I thought I'd try
here.

The background: I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop. This machine has an
ATI Rage 128 Mobility MF driving a 1400x1050 LCD panel. It has 32MB of
Video RAM. I'm using XFree86 4.1 on a Red Hat 7.2 distribution.

X works fine for me in 1400x1050 mode. Actually it works in 1280x1024
mode as well. But at lower resolutions I see "animated garbage" on the
screen, with parts of the screen drawn in the wrong places and other
parts of the screen not drawn at all.

I've tried a number of things to troubleshoot the problem, but the same
results are produced every time:

   * Changing the bit depth from 24 to 16 to 15 to 8.
   * Changing the available resolutions so that the virtual screen size
is no larger than the physical screen size, to avoid panning (in
     case panning was the issue)
   * Using built-in and various user-supplied modelines--including
modelines which match the 60Hz refresh rate of the panel

Is this simply a case of operator error, or is there something else at
work here?

I'm also going to try to do a build from CVS and see if I get the same
behavior...

Cheers,
Jeremy
