Hi,

we have 8 boxes with Radeon VE graphics cards here, all have the same
problem, the system freezes occasionally on shutting down X. Some of the
boxes freeze every time xdm cycles after logout or switching to a text
console is done, others allow switching 5-30 times in a row before the system
freezes. Freezing always happens when X is left. Sometimes a black screen is
left, some of the machines always show the last screen several times repeated
and garbled at once.

It happens whether DVI or Analog output is used. Linux kernels 2.4.10 from
SuSE, or 2.4.17 don't matter. Using a XF86Config generated by SuSEs sax2 or
by XFree86's -configure option doesn't matter.

I have tried XFree86-4.1.0 as supplied by SuSE on 7.3, some patch from the
net (which made the problem less frequently occurring on some of the
machines), the last patched 4.1.0 by SuSE, unpatched 4.2.0, and finally the
4.2.0 supplied by SuSE, all the time the same problem.

When running X the cards work flawlessly.

I cannot supply any log-file entries, since the machines immediately stops
completely when the freeze happens.

Any clever ideas?

Bernd Strieder
