I'm using an ATI Mach64 (PCI) w/4mb ram with the ati driver.

When I load up X, it seems to run fine for about half a minute... then it
begins repeatedly blanking the screen. It's often enough that X is
completely unusable. Each time it blanks, the monitor (a Compaq P700)
makes its familiar "I'm switching video modes now" clicking sound.

I've tried putting the monitor's exact horiz/vert refresh rates into
XF86Config.
I've tried removing all modes and resolutions except 16bit/1024x768.
I've tried disabling all modules.
I've tried enabling and then re-disabling DPMS & power saving (it was
disabled to start with).

Nothing's helped. Anyone have any ideas as to why X is suddenly deciding
to repeatedly go through the motions of switching vid modes while not
actually accomplishing anything?

Also, DRI is not compiled into the kernel, and it's not being used in X
for this old card.
