A default mouse is a reasonable idea. You are the one who wants it most,
so why don't you write a patch and submit it to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ?

I can use the same config and layout with my laptop's built in touch pad
or with both that and and a USB mouse, using the config in:
        http://www.xfree86.org/pipermail/xpert/2001-June/008690.html
plugging the external mouse in and out is fine, although the external
mouse may not be available if the usb kernel modules are not loaded when
the X server starts.

I think that your problems are unusual, since most laptops don't have
touch pads which get in the way when typing.
Although I hate it, I suppose that the window managers which use "click to
change focus" will help to hide this problem too.
