Some time ago when I did a system upgrade I tried Gnome (or KDE)
and saw this problem, couldn't be bothered to understand it and just
kept running fvwm2.

However, I now see it in fvwm2 (and twm) with a just-compiled copy of
xdoom, so maybe it's an X problem rather than a Gnome problem.
Most everything else I ever run is OK (Netscape, xv, staroffice,
xterm, xfig, etc. etc. etc. - I have only seen this problem in I think 2
apps)

The problem:
In an X app (xdoom, or gnuterm/kterm etc.) there is junk following the
cursor around. Under the cursor (invisible in xdoom) is
is an imaginary square about 63 pixels on edge which is OK.
(The cursor at its upper left vertex).
Under this is a translucent blue square superimposed on the screen
Under this is another square composed of translucent vertical bars
in about 3 colours. The pattern repeats to the bottom of the screen.
(Actually they are not all exactly square)

My system:
RedHat 6.0 upgraded to RedHat 6.2, probably with some apps and libraries
left around from old a.out days too.
Graphics device ID: "ATI RAGE II"
XFree86-3.3.6-20
XFree86-Mach64-3.3.6-20
DefaultColorDepth 16

Anyone see this before ?
