Thanks for this suggestion, I was thinking of that too, and looked at 
www.hp.com for the monitor. I found a manual and it said 30-121 H and 48 - 
160 V

I inserted it there, but the result was NIL.
I did another try today with XFdrak, the configuration utility of Mandrake 
8.0. It was able to push this monitor to 85 Hz, when I selected a HP Monitor 
from the list that was close to my specs. Thats better, but still not what I 
would like to get.
Here I modified the HorizSync and VertRefresh lines again, but now the 
monitor is stuck at 85 Hz. I somehow have the impression, that the file I am 
editing the whole time is simply ignored.

Does anybody know which file is used for the refresh rate setting at a 
Mandrake 8.0 system?
