Hi,
I'm in posession of a trident chipset (cyberbladei1d) with 8M and a
nice 14" dstn (1024x768) display which gives me some problems with
the display being offset several pixels, here's the symptoms:
-in 1024x768, the entire display is offset 3 pixels to the right
-in 800x600 stretched, all pixels are visible but 4 colums of
pixels at the right side of the screen (beyond the margin of
the streched screen, so at the 1021/2/3/4 pixel if the physical
display) are lit up
-same for the 640x480 resolution
-having SDL make new viewports results in an unstretched video mode
in the top left corner, and makes the display 'milk-flood' (being
overprinted with bright white pixels), this happens for instance
with Mplayer or when starting up UT.
-manually switching to the lower 2 resolutions and then runnning an
SDL viewport program works fine, although Mplayer allocates an
xv window where stuff goes wrong, the games work fine.
-in lower vidmodes the margin around the stretched display becomes
white or pink depending on what window has the focus of my mouse.
I suspect the video mode setting routines to be the fault of all of this,
since running the card in VESA works flawlessly, with all the video modes
switching properly. Of course, in VESA mode playing video's really eats
up my CPU, while when playing a movie through the accelerated driver it
drops down to 0.8% =).
** Some notes about the log:
- I forced the 3 display modes, to see if the hsync/vsync would make a
difference, which of course doesn't
- the hardcoded modelines are copies of the probed values that the driver
finds himself, I just changed the v/h/c-sync stuff.
- The card can access up to 8MB of memory, I limited the size of it to
4MB in the BIOS, because I only work in 16bpp modes and this is sufficient.
However, of course, the same problems happen with 8MB available to the
card.
- all the options in the trident driver (shadowfb/stretch etc) make no
difference. I tried all of them, even the PCI switches.
** my thoughts
All this makes me think (but who am I, not Alan H. of course) that somehow
my display/vidmodes are set wronlgy for the monitor model I have. I've
been peeking into the c-code (I'm a coder myself, although not a hardware
guru) to see what is happening.
I remember some notes about it actually being a BIOS hack, any ideas?
I would be VERY HAPPY to hack and patch the trident driver to get it
working. I do need pointers as to where I can 'tune' or 'hack' so
I'm not looking into the wrong code.
Anyway, any thoughts will be greatly appreciate!!!
