I forgot to mention something vital:

- In the XF86Config, I specifically set the mode-order to:

    1024x768 800x600 640x480

When I remove the 1024x768, or for that matter, have X start immediately
into one of the 2 lower resolutions, the monitor will switch off
immediately, leaving me a black screen. Only killing the server (ctrl-alt-
bksp) and manually using the keyboard shortcuts to flip the monitor
on and off (the nice Fn-keys) will get it back on. 

I suspect some vital io space is being overwritten here!
