it appears that i have found a fix: disable Option "DPMS" of the VESA
framebuffer driver.

but why the crash? my theory is that because it's a dell machine, and
as we all know, michael dell and bill gates are sleeping with each
other -- it wouldn't be the first time that a dell computer somehow
doesn't work with linux...
