I think I didn't express myself clearly : when switching from e.g. X to
a VT and back, the screen flashes on and off rapidly with random
intervals, from let's say 10 times a second to once every 2 or 3 
seconds, and everything in between.
The only fix is to either restart X (which would prove to be a bit 
cumbersome), or temporarily blank the screen through the machine's 
specific "LCD power save" key combination.

I just tried this with the newest GATOS CVS (which, coincidentily reads 
"Proper stretching for notebook LCD panels in non-native modes"), and 
things seem to be much better now ; didn't try with stock XFree86 yet.
