Urk, I had forgotten about this message that had been sent to XFree86 before I subscribed. The moderator must have kicked it loose.
Please see my earlier post. The problem is an interaction between a clipped polygon filled with a stipple pattern and the pixmap cache. (Pretty obscure huh? ;) ) The problem goes away if you disable the pixmap cache in xaa. For my particular card, the DRI stuff is disabled since I have no /dev/dri entries.
