Hello. Sorry if this question is a waste of anyone's time, but here goes.

I've endeavored over the past few months to get antialiased fonts working
in XFree86, with little luck. Whenever I enable them, my computer freezes
without warning within an hour or so. I've tried X 4.1.0 and 4.2.0,
nVidia drivers 1.0-2314, 1.0-2802, and 1.0-2880, the latest
stable of FreeType2 as of this writing, and routing fonts through both xfs
and XFree86's internal font handling.

The lockups have the following characteristics:

- All animation onscreen stops. Widgets don't respond to input.
- The cursor is still moveable.
- Alt-SysRq combos work as follows:
        - K freezes the box completely. Power-cycle with the BRS is
          needed.
        - S-U-B works to reboot.
        - R has no effect.
        - All others are nonfunctional.
- Attempts to switch to console fail.
- Any music I have playing in the background continues to play.
- Not sure whether I can Telnet in or not; don't own any other boxen.

I've found that the lockups tend to occur when large quantities of type
are being rendered to the screen (loading Web pages in an AA-capable
browser, etc.) or when using antialiased fonts in an XTerm. No error
messages are evident in /var/log/XFree86.0.log (even with X being invoked
with -logverbose 9 -verbose 9) or /var/log/messages. I haven't bothered
to fiddle with syslog to have it log more trivial messages, because I
don't think it'd make much of a difference.

Any help or requests for further testing are welcome. Thank you in
advance for your time.

                                        -- Colin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
