I have discovered a very strange bug that I am curious whether anyone else
has ever come across... Also interested in ideas as to where in the code to
look to begin to fix this. More than happy to solve my own problem if I
can!!
Anyway, when I first installed Mandrake 8.2 with XFree86 4.2.0, I was
completely unable to configure XFree86. I tried again with RedHat 7.2
(XfFree 4.1.0) with the same result. In each case, I received a INVALID MEM
ALLCOATION error (the entire log file is below for anyone who is interested
in such things). Since I knew that I used to have XFree 4.0.1 before on
this machine, I was dumbfounded and began experimenting, rolling back my
BIOS, etc. I have now confirmed and can reproduce the problem as follows:
(a) if I clear the ECSD (Fn-F11 on bootup for my machine, which is a Compaq
Armada M700), XFree86 will work fine; (b) if after shutting down, I place my
computer in its docking station, boot Linux, and try to run XFree86, I get
the INVALID MEM ALLOCATION ERROR; (c) here is the strange part: if I
shutdown, remove my computer from the docking station, and then start Linux
again, I still get the INVALID MEM ALLOCATION error. In order to fix it, I
need to reset my ECSD every time after using the docking station!!!! I have
tried using the Gatos code to no avail. And in any event, I cannot get
either my primary video card working nor the secondary card in the docking
station to work in docked mode.

I am out of ideas. Please give me something to try!!!
Bug report has been submitted but I am not holding my breath; I suspect this
is very hardware specific though there are a lot of M700's/ArmadaStations
out there!
