You may be another victim of Intel refusing to publish the programmer's reference for the i830 graphics controller. See http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~chak/linux/c400.html for a description of the problem affecting a number of laptops. The problem is known to affect some Sony PCG R505. If you come to the conclusion that your machine has indeed the same problem, please drop me a note so that I can list your model on the above web site.
